After my last son moved out, I began to clean the empty shell once referred to as, “Jr's room”. It was a slow process and I had no particular plan other than to give it a good cleaning. As I cleaned, I began to go through things I hadn't seen in years. My quest eventually led me to the attic and as all creative and sentimental mothers will tell you.....I couldn't get rid of a thing. I had kept drawings, journals, report cards, children's books, Mother's day cards, shoes, teeth (I know that's disgusting), the ankle and wrist bands from the hospital, the little blue caps that are placed on their heads to keep them warm, table clothes from baby showers, the tiny, plastic decorations that were on the cake and I still have an “It’s a boy” cigar (do those get better with age? you know…. like wine?). Well, since I obviously couldn't throw these treasures away and I had an empty room..........need I say more? The creative juices started to flow and there was no stopping me. My poor husband just sat back as I literally ran around the house with nails, hammers, paint, stain, glue guns (2), a meat pounder (don't ask), screws, screw guns, battery packs and picture frames too numerous to count. Once I start a project….well, let’s just say I’ll stop before it’s done…..When Pigs Fly! One of my boys gave me a toy pig with wings as a present one year. Once hung from the ceiling and turned on, the pig flew in circles. Anyway, what I didn't mention at the beginning of the story was Jr was the last of 4 boys to move out. I always wanted a girl but God loaned me what He knew I needed. TESTOSTERONE?!?!?!?!? The glorious news is SO FAR……..all the grandchildren are turning into girls (at conception or whenever that happens) you get the idea, right? NO MORE BLUE!!!! No more Hot Wheels, Ninja Turtles, Batman, frogs, snakes and sailor suits. The skies are my limit. I stripped the paint off some furniture my Dad made when he was in high school and stained it. Talk about a shop class. He made a chest of drawers, dresser, head and foot board and a night stand. Yes, with real wood and a real saw. Can you imagine a shop class like that now? I chose stain because lets face it....crayons and markers are going to surface when I'm not around and I thought stain would be safer. I framed some of my favorite pictures of the boys when they were little and used the clay figurines they made at school to add to the decor. So, ladies, except for the teeth, I used my daddy’s shop class project and my children's art to turn that room into a beautiful haven for their girls. Now the girls know it's THEIR room and no one else's. God answered my prayers and sent female angels, finally and they have a room filled with family history. NEED A KLEENEX? Now if only I can get my camera back to post pics!
